PAL Robotics | Building the future of robotics with ROS 2 and open source

Luca, CTO at PAL Robotics, Sai Kishar, senior robotics engineer at PAL Robotics, Carlos Vivas, chief business officer at PAL Robotics, and Francisco Martín Rico, professor at Rey Juan Carlos University, discuss ROS 2, open-source robotics, and community involvement.

    Introductions

Luca oversees product and technology development at PAL Robotics. Sai Kishar works on control algorithms and humanoid locomotion, while Carlos Vivas focuses on company growth. Francisco Martín Rico teaches at Rey Juan Carlos University and contributes ROS packages, including Splash, which he authored.

  2. 0:49

Why PAL Robotics uses open source

Luca says ROS has helped PAL Robotics improve its software capabilities and develop products for academia and industry. He argues that teams can build better robots by using and extending existing libraries instead of recreating software, while making that work sustainable. Sai Kishar adds that the active open-source community makes collaboration possible.

  3. 1:46

Moving from ROS 1 to ROS 2

Francisco Martín Rico points to ROS 2's more mature multiplatform software and security capabilities. Migration asks students to learn more about programming and project management, but he sees that as useful preparation. He says ROS 1 is end of life and describes his university as having migrated to ROS 2.

  4. 2:38

    Community and collaboration

Sai Kishar describes nine years in the ROS community and says contributors can find that others have already solved problems they encounter. He characterizes progress as the work of a group rather than one person. Francisco Martín Rico says Spain has a strong ROS community, supported by open-source use in academia and industry.

  5. 3:29

    PAL Robotics' ROS 2 contributions

Luca says PAL Robotics fixes bugs and adds features to existing ROS 2 packages. The company also takes part in ROSCon, organizes ROS conferences in Spain, and holds meetups to exchange ideas and bring robotics software practitioners together.
