PAL Robotics | AgROBOfood Project SCaFo
A PAL Robotics presenter discusses the AgROBOfood-supported SCaFo project with General Carnia, applying TIAGo-based mobile robots to transport meat in a food-processing plant.

Supporting robotics adoption in agri-food
AgROBOfood helps small and medium-sized agri-food businesses adopt digital technologies by connecting them with robotics startups and SMEs. It also uses private matching funds to help robotic products scale.
- 0:39
A mobile robot for food transport
SCaFo aims to deploy a group of autonomous mobile robots based on PAL Robotics' TIAGo platform. The robots are intended to move food through the changing, unstructured conditions of processing facilities.

Testing in a meat-processing plant
The robots must cope with cold rooms kept between 0 and 4°C, moisture, slippery floors, and nearby workers. At General Carnia, a meat producer with over a century of experience and a large production site, the team chose to test moving stored meat from a freezer to a processing station. Automating that trip could free workers for more valuable duties.

Adapting TIAGo for hygiene and usability
The team modified the platform for reliable long-term use, adding antennas, a touchscreen interface, and a structure suited to carrying processed food. Its base can handle up to 150 kg; smooth polymer covers limit bacterial buildup and help keep water out, while food-industry wheels reduce the risk of contaminating the workspace. Human-aware navigation supports operation alongside staff, and visual programming lets non-technical workers configure tasks.

Funding helps manage innovation risk
The presenter says research and development carries substantial risk for companies. EU funding and expert-led R&D services can help SMEs develop technical solutions and advance digitalization in the sector.
