Humanoid Robots Redefining the Future of Healthcare

Paolo of Oversonic Robotics explains the company’s approach to humanoid robots for industrial work and healthcare at a Bloomberg Tech event in London, with host Bloomberg Live and a demonstration by robot R.O.V.A.

    Building robots to support workers

Paolo says he and co-founder Fabio set out to turn a humanoid prototype into a certified product. The company focuses on tasks that can support people, including emergency room triage, rather than household chores. He says certification was essential for use in manufacturing and healthcare, including CE, EMC, collaborative robot, GDPR and AI Act requirements.

  2. 2:39

    Europe’s role in robotics

Paolo argues that Europe can compete by building an ecosystem around robotics and bringing cultural and ethical considerations into the way machines collect and use data. He cites 395 million workers injured during work as a reason to develop tools that support people. He says European companies need to collaborate, especially as rare earth supply constraints pose a shared risk.

  3. 6:01

    Balancing AI with physical hardware

Paolo describes AI algorithms and neural networks as part of a robot’s cognition, while its joints and motors determine how it moves. Industrial tasks require precise positioning, not just reaching a general area. He sees Europe’s experience in industrial automation, universities and engineering as strengths that can help it develop both sides of the system.

  4. 7:44

    R.O.V.A.’s design and healthcare tasks

During the demonstration, R.O.V.A. describes assisting patients with recovery through motivational and cognitive activities, and helping staff by transporting materials and accompanying patients. Paolo says wheels support safety certification and help the robot operate for eight hours; he says bipedal robots may manage only a couple of hours. The robot also demonstrates object handling, movement, visual scene description and number exercises.

  5. 18:33

    Privacy, reliability and current applications

Paolo says household use is not the company’s current focus, citing safety and the amount of environmental data robots may collect. He says Oversonic has adopted a social benefit statute in Italy. The company is active in manufacturing intralogistics and has tested robots in healthcare with people with stroke and Parkinson’s, including cognitive, physical and language exercises; a stage connection issue also showed the need for people to work with the robot when problems arise.
