Jerome Monceaux (Enchanted Tools) | Transforming Robotics with AI & Human Connection
Jerome Monceaux, co-founder and CEO of Enchanted Tools, discusses designing social, character-driven robots with Jeff at the Humanoids Summit 2024 in Mountain View.
Jérôme, presenting Enchanted Tools’ Miroki prototype, introduces the robot’s story and design, then explains its intended role in moving objects in hospitals and other workplaces.
Jérôme frames the demonstration as a story about the Mirokaï, who value seeing wonder in others, and Miroki’s journey from the planet Miroko. Miroki enters a new robot body, meets Jérôme and the audience, and retrieves a rune with help from a specially designed handle. The presentation also previews a combined Miroki and Miroka character, which Jérôme says will take two years to prepare.
Jérôme says robots and AI should not be presented as fully autonomous or self-aware; Enchanted Tools treats characters as a way to tell stories. He describes a rune that can be sensed through walls, detect movement or touch, and be given a name. A handle lets the robots carry selected items on trays, carts, baskets, or other accessories.
Enchanted Tools aims to let people assign object-moving tasks by voice or schedule, such as returning a cart to a pharmacy or taking a tray to different rooms. Jérôme cites hospitals as a use case: a small hospital can see 100,000 object movements each week, while caregivers may lose 48 minutes a day moving or searching for items. He says the team is testing the idea with six experimental sites and hospital and research partners in Paris and elsewhere.
Jérôme gives a target price of €30,000 and production ambitions of 100,000 robots over ten years. The prototype is 1.23 metres tall, weighs about 26 kg, runs for eight hours, and carries up to 3 kg; it can also be guided by hand and moves on a compact, omnidirectional base. Its character design is meant to make attention and intended actions easier to understand, while the handle limits what it can pick up.
Jérôme outlines a process that began with character design and 3D modelling, then progressed to mechanical, electronic, software, and AI development. The team worked on lifelike responses such as reacting to loud sounds, nearby people, speech, and objects, while clarifying that the robot only appears alive. He reports that in twelve months the company raised €16.5 million, hired 50 employees, built three functional robot prototypes, and established scientific and industry partnerships.
