From education actuators to DYNAMIXEL Pro
J introduces DARwIn-OP and the DYNAMIXEL actuator range, from AX-12 to MX-106, used in robotics education and research. DYNAMIXEL Pro is presented as an option for professional development and full-scale robots. J says it uses a BLDC motor and cycloidal gearing, with about 20 times more torque and roughly a thousand times greater accuracy.

Connect and inspect the actuators
J uses DYNAMIXEL Wizard software to select a COM port and search over the DYNAMIXEL 2.0 protocol. The search finds four DYNAMIXEL Pro units. Their control tables expose readable and writable values such as ID, position, velocity, and torque.

Manipulate a five kilogram load
After reconnecting, J demonstrates a manipulator and points to live force readings for each joint. The mechanism has two degrees of freedom in each of two parts and handles about five kilograms. The demo illustrates how the actuators can be used to build a strong manipulator.

Adapt the actuator for mobile robots
J shows a field-mode mobile robot application built around a simple pantograph mechanism, with a camera-like device on top. Separating the body from the cycloidal gear allows the wheel system to move. J describes the setup as a renewable application system that can be adapted by adding DYNAMIXEL Pro.
